Birds “mochi”

£89

These round birds are created using the Raku firing technique. The Raku process ensures that each bird is one-of-a-kind as it’s impossible to predict the outcome of the firing process.

The birds are crafted manually with a white clay that has a rough texture, which can withstand the extreme temperature changes during the Raku firing process. The parts that require glazing are meticulously polished to achieve a smooth finish, resulting in a highly tactile piece.

First, the birds are bisque fired in an wood kiln before applying a copper-based glaze. Next, they are fired in the Raku kiln until they reach approximately 1000C. Afterward, the birds are placed in a steel container filled with sawdust. Due to the container’s air-tight nature, the sawdust’s combustion draws oxygen from the clay, creating black cracks in the glaze that are characteristic of Raku.

The price quoted is for a single bird.

Each bird measures approximately 11cm in length, 8cm in width, and stands at around 11.5cm in height.
